World Matchplay second round preview
Rob Cross has produced the best first-round return in Betfred World Matchplay, but that shouldn’t necessarily excite bettors ahead of his second-round clash with Jose de Sousa.
Voltage fought back 8-2 to beat Chris Dobey 11-9 at the Winter Gardens, though Dobey attributed it to “bottle work” on his part rather than anything exceptional from Cross.
And the statistics confirm it. Cross, despite finishing a fairly respectable 34%, averaged only a shade above 90 and was below his best, as he has been for some time.
But that opens the door for De Sousa, whose form has been all over the place, but he boasts a good one-on-one record against Cross, winning four of their last six games. He looked rock solid beating Gabriel Clemens 10-6 in his opener with a big scoring barrage.
Speaking of big scores, Gerwyn Price hit eight 180s in his 10-8 win over Martin Schindler. He now plays Dave Chisnall, obviously a renowned maximum hitter, although he struggled in the heat to locate the red bit against Kim Huybrechts.
He’s streaky but Price can be too and the Ice Man looks like a massive price at 13-5 to win the 180 game.
