Wednesday preview

Blackburn’s brilliant start to the season quickly faded after three successive defeats, but a return to victory looks likely in their Lancashire derby with Blackpool injured at Bloomfield Road.

Jon Dahl Tomasson got off to a flying start as manager of Blackburn, taking them to the top of the Championship table with maximum points in their first three games.

Fortunes have turned against Tomasson’s troops more recently, although Saturday’s 1-0 loss at home to Stoke was a bit unlucky given the overall dominance of Rovers, who led the shots tally 18 to eight .

Finishing in the top six remains Blackburn’s ambition and they will have a better chance if they can retain Chile striker Ben Brereton Diaz beyond the transfer deadline.

Blackpool are just one point worse off, but they conceded an injury-time equalizer in Saturday’s 3-3 draw at home to Bristol City and go into the midweek contest with an absentee list growing.

On loan, Liverpool defender Rhys Williams was sent off at the weekend and the Tangerines’ patched-up back line could struggle to keep Blackburn at bay.

Alex Neil watched from the stands as Stoke triumphed 1-0 at Blackburn on Saturday and the new Potters boss could lead his side to victory over Swansea at the bet365 Stadium.

Neil’s sudden switch from Sunderland to the Potteries hasn’t gone down well at Wearside, but the 41-year-old is a talented manager and it shouldn’t be long before he taps into the potential of an underperforming Stoke side.

Stoke are aiming for a playoff spot and should have a better season than Swansea, who continue to be troubled by transfer speculation.

Swans boss Russell Martin is unable to confirm whether or not key striker Joel Piroe is going to be retained, and Martin’s defense is weakened by centre-back Ben Cabango’s one-game ban.

Swansea have started the season badly, taking five points from a possible 18, and another loss is on the cards.
