Due to the growing number of COVID-19 cases, the Prairie South School Division has made the decision to suspend tournament travel for school sports teams until January 22.
The discussion came during the discussion of out-of-province school trips at the Prairie South School Division council meeting on Tuesday.
Administrator Lew Young inquired about the approval given to wrestling teams to enter a tournament in Alberta and if there were any restrictions.
Derrick Huschi, superintendent of school operations for grades 9-12 schools, said the wrestling tournament won’t take place until after Jan. 22, but basketball teams have been told travel to tournaments and the organization of tournaments have been suspended.
Huschi added that the situation is a bit different for rural school teams who have to travel for league games.
“They will still be able to continue to have these types of games because these are their league games, whereas schools in and around Moose Jaw will only be allowed to play in their leagues, so we are keeping them in the division,” Huschi noted.
Teams from the Prairie South School Division in Moose Jaw will still be allowed to play teams from the Holy Trinity Catholic School Division in league play.
Huschi said the school division will reevaluate closer to Jan. 22 to decide what happens after that date.
