Preview of the first round

Arnold Palmer Invitational favorite Jon Rahm is one of the last starters in the first round of the Bay Hill rally – the Spaniard joins compatriot and fellow Ryder Cup winner Sergio Garcia in the 5:57 p.m. Kingdom and Ireland).

Sam Burns rounds out the afternoon marquee group. The trio of Rory McIlroy, Adam Scott and Sepp Straka will occupy much of the morning spotlight (1.27pm UK). The forecast calls for sunny and calm conditions all day, with the breeze not picking up until Friday afternoon.

Keith Mitchell will start in a low-key three-ball at 12:43 p.m., and the Georgia-based swinger looks the best bet on the map at 5-4 to defeat Branden Grace and Lucas Herbert.

Mitchell relishes the PGA Tour’s Florida Swing. His only Tour victory came at the Honda Classic at Palm Beach Gardens and he also excelled at Bay Hill, finishing sixth and fifth on his first two visits.

Given how Mitchell has hit his ball in recent weeks, with form numbers of 12-10-9 in his last three starts, there’s every reason to believe he’ll be leading Grace and Herbert at Bay Hill. . Grace has been poor this year, while Herbert makes his Bay Hill debut.

Another former Honda Classic champion worth supporting this week is Sungjae Im, who finished third twice in this event. Im can become the best Korean by beating Si Woo Kim and KH Lee, while local man Billy Horschel appeals in a match against Talor Gooch.

Bet365 allowed Gooch to overtake Horschel, but if Horschel pairs a more typical putting performance with the excellent ball-striking he showcased in the Honda last week, he seems like the more likely title contender.
