With a little more than halfway through the season, Saturday’s NCL Premier Division clash at Mayfield Sports Center matters. Opposition Leigh Miners sit mid-table with Mayfield, four points clear of the play-off zone.

The play-offs remain an achievable goal for both teams, but they need to start winning games on a regular basis. For the team of Sam Butterworth and Steve Wood, Saturday is the day it starts to happen. Although Mayfield was beaten last week, at home to Wath Brow, there were some real positives to take from the performance. The fight and resilience shown in the second half was exceptional as it stopped Brow from adding to their scoring in the first half. In the end, they were unlucky not to get anything out of the game.

Today Mayfield is stronger on the pitch as Si Moore, Nick Hargreaves and Lewis Butterworth are all set to return and Darcy Maroske faces a late fitness test after missing last week through injury . All four are quality players and have a huge impact on the games they have played. One player who will be missing today is Jarrod Dash. The unlucky Aussie returned last week after three weeks out with a hamstring injury and it looks like he will need surgery on a suspected broken thumb picked up against the minors.

The coaches have struggled to maintain a consistent squad so far and are hoping a solid performance and a convincing win today will turn the season in their favor. There’s no doubt that with more commitment and a bit more trickery on the pitch, this team would be up there for a top-four spot, let alone looking to make the play-offs.
