Jy Hitchcox has signed with Rochdale Hornets on loan for the remainder of the 2022 campaign.

The Hornets were able to secure the services of Hitchcox earlier in the season on a two-week loan and the former Castleford man did not disappoint.

The Aussie impressed on his debut, despite the Hornets losing at Cougar Park, and then recorded a fine hat-trick – the following week – in the 46-28 win over Doncaster.

His try-scoring abilities came as no surprise given the 21 Super League tries he scored in 2017, which were key to winning the League leaders’ shield from Daryl Powell’s side.

Since then he has continued to race in Trials at the top of the Championship – and was part of the Toulouse Olympique team that won promotion to the Super League last season.

Hornets head coach Matt Calland is delighted to have Hitchcox back for a second spell at the club – as his side aim to win promotion to the Championship.

He said: “Jy was great for us in his short spell last time out so it’s great to have him for this crucial part of the season.

“He adds valuable experience on the edge, reads the game brilliantly and is a class finisher. Welcome, Jay!”

The president, Andy Mazey, is also delighted to find a player of the caliber of Hitchcox.

He said: “It is a massive blow for the Rochdale Hornets to secure the services of one of the most successful outside backs outside the Super League in recent years.

“That may sound like a bold statement, but it’s absolutely backed up by Jy’s stats – and performances – at the top of the Championship, with Toulouse and Bradford, as well as in the Super League with Castleford.

“Jy was unlucky to end up just behind Blake Ferguson and Krisnan Inu, in the pecking order, this year at Leigh and his playing time was limited accordingly.

“He’s a player Matt really enjoyed working with, when he was here before; Additionally, his experience in top-level rugby league makes him a great person our young players can learn from.

“We have worked extremely hard to reach an agreement with Leigh and I have to thank Chris Chester for his support on this. Welcome Jy”

Hitchcox will be directly in contention for Sunday’s game at Oldham.
