Isla-Rose Goodfellow, 10, qualified for the World Karate Championships in Florida next year after winning two medals at the National Karate Championships in October.

Isla-Rose, from the Dojo Karate Center in Rochdale, won a bronze medal for her weapon kata category and a gold medal for her fighting category.

The St Gabriel student joined the Dojo Karate Center in May 2021, then was chosen for the squad team a few months later after training three hours a week. Team members can participate in team and external competitions.

Isla-Rose competed in three team competitions, winning three gold medals and trophies and two bronze medals. From there, she was able to compete in qualifying for the world championships in Birmingham on October 16.

Her mother, Nickala Fenton, said, “We’re incredibly proud of Isla-Rose, and we can’t wait to get to Florida to compete.”

The world championships will be held in Daytona Beach, Florida in July 2023.
