Rochdale Hornets are proud to announce the signing of Jy Hitchcox from Leigh Centurions, on a first two week loan deal.

The signing is the Hornets’ second in just five days after bringing in Fenton Rogers from the Huddersfield Giants.

The 32-year-old adds even more attacking threat to a side that have already scored 314 points, in just seven Ligue 1 games this season.

The Aussie also brings a wealth of experience with him, having represented Wests Tigers, Castleford Tigers and Bradford Bulls.

Hitchcox played a pivotal role as Castleford made it to the 2017 Super League Grand Final and won the League Leaders’ Shield, scoring 21 tries in 26 games.

Since then, the winger has also plied his trade at Toulouse Olympique and helped the French side secure their first ever Super League promotion.

Hornets president Andy Mazey is thrilled to have signed someone of Hitchcox’s caliber.

He said: “We are absolutely delighted to bring a player of Jy’s quality to the Rochdale Hornets.

“Matt has been keen to bolster his backline options and you only have to look at Jy’s try record, in the Super League and at the top of the league, to appreciate what a coup it is for the Hornets – and the Ligue 1 competition as a whole.

“I would personally like to pay tribute and thank Chris Chester and Derek de Leigh for their support on this one.”

Although Hitchcox’s deal is only a short-term deal, throughout his career he has demonstrated his ability to hit the ground running and is the only player in history to score on his debut in all levels of professional rugby league – in both hemispheres.

He hopes to maintain this unprecedented record when the Hornets travel to the Keighley Cougars this Sunday, May 15 (kick-off at 3 p.m.).
