Rochdale News | Sports News | 50 days until Manchester are toppled by the return of Originals

Date published: June 15, 2022

There are less than 50 days until the world’s best cricketers, hottest musical groups and amazing food hit Manchester, as Manchester Originals and The Hundred return to Emirates Old Trafford for the sporting event and summer entertainment.

The Hundred’s first year was a big hit with families and young people in particular, relishing the mix of fast-paced, world-class cricket with music and family entertainment off the pitch.

The Originals have a roster of talent for their second year, led by Heywood-born rhythm bowler Kate Cross, who made history last year by hitting The Hundred’s top six and taking 12 wickets, and explosive drummer Jos Buttler.

World number one bowler Sophie Ecclestone and last year’s top scorer Lizelle Lee return to the women’s team, while local hero Matt Parkinson and exciting batsman Phil Salt have been retained in the men’s team.

Both teams have also brought in key reinforcements, with international superstars Andre Russell, Deandra Dottin, Amy Satterthwaite and Wanindu Hasaranga all set to make their Originals debuts.

Off-pitch entertainment will include the return of BBC Radio Manchester’s DJ Roesh as home game host, while an all-star musical lineup curated by BBC Introducing will soon be announced.

Manchester Originals women’s captain Kate Cross said: “There were some defining moments in both the women’s and men’s games last year as we defined the way we want the Originals to play. We have immense talent in both teams and if we perform at the level we know this group is capable of, nothing can stop us from going all the way.

“The Hundred presents a huge opportunity for our game and it will be a fantastic summer, with something for everyone no matter your age or background. I can’t wait to get back in front of the fans at Emirates Old Trafford to do it all again .

The Manchester Originals home fixtures at Emirates Old Trafford are as follows:

  • Saturday August 13 – Manchester Originals vs Trent Rockets (women start 11am, men start 2.30pm)
