Match Preview

Nottingham Forest fans can be forgiven for dreaming big after the club’s spending this summer, but the Tricky Trees could be anchored by a strong Tottenham side led by Harry Kane in their first big challenge of the season at City Ground.

Upon their return to the Premier League, Forest have spent almost £150million on 15 new players and more could follow before the transfer window closes on Thursday.

And so far the introduction of new players into the starting line-up has yielded decent results for Steve Cooper’s side, who responded to an opening defeat to Newcastle with a victory over West Ham in their first top-flight home game in 23 years.

They also came close to maximum points at Everton last time out, as Brennan Johnson’s 81st-minute strike was canceled out by Demarai Gray seven minutes later.

Four points from three games – two of them on the road – is a decent comeback for a newly-promoted side, but it’s very early days and Forest are still 6-4 down for relegation this campaign.

And on Sunday afternoon, Forest fans will get their first taste of how their club will handle one of the Premier League’s so-called ‘Big Six’.

Unfortunately for them, the first of these teams they face is a Tottenham side touted by some as dark horses in the title chase.

Tottenham’s performances in their first three matches were disappointing – they found themselves one goal behind against Southampton, were second to Chelsea and lost on shots 11-20 in their labored 1-0 home win over the United. Wolves last time.

But despite being far from their best, Spurs still picked up seven points from their opening three games.

That should give Tottenham fans confidence, as getting results from playing poorly is a hallmark of a top team and something they’ve been unable to do at times.

Manager Antonio Conte will want to see performances to match the results as soon as possible and at the City Ground his side should have more chances to show their class.

Forest’s approach of playing with a back three suits the Premier League, but in their opening three league games they have left plenty of chances for their opponents.

If they do the same against a Tottenham side led by Heung-min Son, Dejan Kulusevski and Kane, who have scored in the team’s last two games, they could open themselves up to a hammering.

With a home crowd behind them, however, Forest should have their own chances, especially as Cristian Romero is likely to be out again for the visitors, and backing Spurs to win and over 2.5 goals could be a solid strategy.

Key stat

Forest have allowed their opponents a total of 61 shots in their three Premier League matches.
