Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Yerry Mina are back in contention but Donny van de Beek, Nathan Patterson, Tom Davies, Ben Godfrey and Andros Townsend are ruled out.
Mateo Kovacic, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Ben Chilwell are absent but Andreas Christensen could feature.
Everton, third down, are exactly where they don’t want to be with three weeks of the season to play and their survival hopes could be dealt another blow by Chelsea, who appear to have a good chance of winning at Goodison.
The home results have been key for the Toffees, who have picked up 23 of their 29 points on Merseyside, and Chelsea will be aware of the potential travel difficulties at Goodison, where they have taken just one point in their last four visits.
However, Chelsea’s away record this season is 11 wins, four draws and two losses – second best in the division – and there was nothing wrong with their performance in the 1-1 draw in Thursday at Manchester United.
The Blues dominated at Old Trafford, winning on shots 21-6, and their failure to secure three points will only add to their desire to win at Everton.
Chelsea have been in the top 3 since September and Thomas Tuchel wants to secure Champions League qualification as soon as possible so he can focus on preparing for the FA Cup final.
Tuchel never likes to look too far ahead, but the next two weeks are a clear opportunity for players to work their way into his final cup thoughts and that should ensure high standards are maintained.
A motivated Chelsea is the last thing Everton have to deal with as there is a stark class gap between the teams.
When Frank Lampard was sacked by Chelsea in January 2021, the Londoners were ninth, three points below sixth-placed Everton.
Since then the clubs have gone in very different directions, with Chelsea racking up 104 points in 54 games and Everton recording 56 in 51 games.
Lampard inherited a difficult situation when he took over the job from Everton in January, but his side have struggled to react and lack the time to stay on their feet.
Everton’s options appear to be increasing for the run-in with Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Yerry Mina back from injury, but their general lack of confidence – aided by months of lackluster performances and results – is a huge problem.
Lampard’s side showed great spirit and determination in last Sunday’s 2-0 defeat at Liverpool, but it’s the courage to step forward and dictate the games that will be needed as they aim for the kills they need to get out of the drop zone.
Home fans will expect them to play with more intention against Chelsea and their wishes might be granted.
However, Chelsea’s away record shows they are generally more effective against more attacking opposition and another successful road trip is set for this weekend.
