Match Preview

After spending the whole summer at home without winning a series of limited overs cricket, England hit a rich vein of form at the perfect time for their opening game of the Twenty20 World Cup against Afghanistan in Perth Saturday.

Over the past month, England won 4-3 in an away series against Pakistan and beat Australia 2-0 on their own ground. They were down to 11-4 as most companies won the T20 World Cup in the process.

Anything but a win for England in their opener against Afghanistan would be a shock, although their bowling attack will be a bit weaker after Reece Topley was sent off the tournament with an ankle problem .

Topley had a great summer of clean-ball cricket for England and his quality with the new ball and in the deathmatch will be missed.

But in Topley’s absence, one player who could step in is the versatile Sam Curran.

One of Curran’s strengths is that he can take the ball at any stage of the innings, but he’s also established himself as a good death thrower recently, defending 16 in the Game 1 final of England against Australia earlier this month and 22 in the second. .

He also picked up five wickets in those two matches and looks worth the bet to take two or more against Afghanistan.
