Insight

Burnley and Blackburn meet today in the first East Lancashire derby in over five years, with the winner knowing they will head into the World Cup break at the top of the Championship table.

The Clarets sit atop the second tier despite the fact that their 16-match league unbeaten streak ended in spectacular fashion as they lost 5-2 at Sheffield United in their last league game.

The defeat at Bramall Lane was a blow for Vincent Kompany and his players, but they responded with a 3-1 home victory over Crawley in the EFL Cup in midweek.

The win means Burnley have won five home games in all competitions and haven’t lost in 11 games at Turf Moor this season.

Blackburn also enjoyed cup success during the week as despite being named a very different side, Jon Dahl Tomasson’s side eliminated West Ham on penalties after a 2-2 draw in London.

Rovers are also playing well in the Championship, winning five of their last six, but six defeats in ten league road outings this term suggests there is vulnerability within their squad.

Burnley can take advantage of such weakness, especially with Rovers failing to score in their six away defeats this season.
