Preview of the fight

Gervonta Davis defends his WBA (regular) lightweight title against Rolando Romero at the Barclays Center in New York on Sunday morning and bettors should bet on an early stoppage.

This fight was originally scheduled for December last year, but problems outside the ring forced Romero to postpone the contest.

Davis is one of boxing’s rising stars and the Tank is undefeated in his 26 professional fights. Of course, not all of those wins were against elite level boxers, but the wins over Isaac Cruz, Leo Santa Cruz and Jose Pedraza read well in the context of this fight.

It’s been hard not to have been impressed with how the Baltimore banger has progressed. Davis has stopped 24 of his previous 26 opponents, and that includes boxers such as Santa Cruz, Pedraza and Mario Barrios, who hadn’t been knocked out before or since.

Romero is a hungry, undefeated young fighter. However, Rolly has never been with someone with the Tank’s boxing skills or power.

The Las Vegas fighter isn’t averse to taking a gamble and the 26-year-old has looked wild and out of control at times. This will likely give Davis plenty of opportunities to land his heavy hands and back up a Tank win in rounds one through six seems the game.

On the undercard, Gary O’Sullivan gets a crack at Erislandy Lara’s WBA world middleweight title. Lara is slightly off the elite tier, but the 1-20 quotes on an American Dream win tell you everything you need to know about Spike’s odds.

The Irishman fell short against Billy Joe Saunders, Chris Eubank Jr, David Lemieux and Jaime Munguia. Spike has been stopped in three of those four losses and there will be no improvement in skill or punch resistance at the age of 37. Lara can knock O’Sullivan out of the ring from a distance.
