Preview of the first round

Accurate play from tee to green is key to success at Valderrama and it indicates that Fabrizio Zanotti will put on a great show at the Andalucia Masters this week.

The Paraguayan finished fourth in this Spanish test last year and 26th in his other previous fixture this decade, so he has far better course credentials than Matthew Jordan and Daniel van Tonder, who join him at 12.30pm on Thursday.

Zanotti was four strokes behind winner Matthew Fitzpatrick last year, while Jordan’s only result at Valderrama was the 52nd he collected two years ago and Van Tonder missed the weekend by seven strokes Last year.

There hasn’t been much to get excited about their recent play either, as Van Tonder has struggled to stay in the world’s top 200 since winning the SA Open in December, while fourth in Jordan at Made in Himmerland a few weeks ago is the only top-20 finisher he has claimed in the last five months.

Zanotti missed the cut in his last outing at the Italian Open, but he preceded that with top 20 finishes at the European Masters (16th), Made in Himmerland (12th) and BMW PGA Championship (13th).

He was tied for second after the first lap at Wentworth and is capable of another fast start.
