Overview of bets

A field of 128 players will be reduced to just 16 over the next ten days at the English Institute of Sport in qualifying for this year’s Betfred World Championship.

Those who pass will earn a ticket to the showpiece of the Crucible and the qualifier format certainly favors the higher ranked players.

The top 16 participating players will only need to win two matches to secure a spot in the main draw, while those at the bottom of the leaderboard need to win up to four matches.

Some players have more favorable paths than others, and two-time runner-up Ali Carter is expected to return to the Crucible.

The captain made back-to-back quarter-finals at the Welsh Open and Turkish Masters in March and faces Dylan Emery, Mitchell Mann or Gao Yang in the third qualifying round.

Carter should pass this test and shouldn’t fear Mathew Stevens or Sam Craigie in a best-of-19 decider for a Crucible spot.

Hossein Vafaei became the first Iranian to win a rankings title in this season’s Snooker Shoot-Out and can continue his rise in the rankings with a first Crucible appearance.

Vafaei has been one of the sport’s big improvers in recent seasons and has shown he has the game to mix it up with the top flight.
Two other cueman to consider for the main draw are Ben Woollaston and Zhou Yuelong.

Woollaston, who made the last 16 of the British Championship earlier in the campaign, is far more capable than a world ranking of 45 would suggest and, based on the evidence from this season, he would be expected to beat Martin Gould if they were meeting in a best-of-19 decision maker.

Yuelong is housed in the same section as Stephen Maguire, but a third-round encounter with Andy Hicks or Zhang Anda is easier than the test Maguire could receive from Thailand’s Sunny Akani.

Even so, Maguire has only made five appearances in 2022, losing four times, while Chinese star Yuelong appears to be in fine form when the time is right.
