Match preview

Time is running out for Frank Lampard to save Everton from falling but there are indications the Toffees could be starting to turn the corner and they can take advantage of an inconsistent Tottenham squad.

Everton are dangerously close to the relegation zone after a two-game winning streak since late September, one point and one place above the bottom three.

A terrible away record is partly to blame for their predicament, with the Toffees taking the league’s worst six points in 12 games on their travels, and yet they are expected to travel to the capital in a state of positive spirit.

Everton look far more organized and determined as they keep leaders Manchester City at bay for large swathes of their latest Premier League engagement and were only undone by a one-on-one error from Michael Keane.

Not being awarded a penalty for a handball so obvious that Umpires’ Association chief Mike Riley had to apologize didn’t help matters and Everton may consider themselves unlucky not to have taken something away from the match.

Lampard deployed a three-man midfield to great effect, with the energy of Allan and Abdoulaye Doucoure forcing City into unusual mistakes.

They should expect to control the middle of the park against a Tottenham side that have a soft underbelly, with Richarlison and Dominic Calvert-Lewin, if available, able to bully the Spurs back line.

Lampard looked hopeful in his pre-match press conference that Calvert-Lewin would play a role against Tottenham, potentially from the bench, and Everton have severely missed their presence up front in a plagued campaign to injuries for the English man.

A presence up front is a department not lacking at Tottenham with Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son combining beautifully to put Leeds to the sword in their latest league outing.

Another performance like that and Everton will be in trouble, but Spurs’ hallmark of late has been inconsistency.

Back-to-back defeats at home to Wolves and Southampton aside, Tottenham have alternated wins and losses since the start of the year, following their ruthless 4-0 win at Leeds with a lukewarm performance at Middlesbrough as their silverware hopes were finished. with a 1-0 overtime loss.

Antonio Conte named his strongest team at the Riverside with Kane and Son playing the full 120 minutes. By contrast, Lampard was able to make six changes as Everton won an trouble-free FA Cup against Boreham Wood the following night.

Spurs looked jaded against Middlesbrough as they suffered a seventh defeat in their 13th game of 2022, with only Brentford having lost more games (eight) in all competitions among Premier League sides.

Given that record, backing Tottenham at odds has little appeal and pitting them against an Everton side that have shown combat and passion – qualities strangely absent from a Conte team – could prove profitable.
