Rochdale Brazilian Jiu Jitsu star Andrew Perez received an award after meeting Rochdale Mayor Ali Ahmed.

Andrew received an award for his developments and performances in the sport, which recently saw him win a gold medal alongside his younger brother, Collin.

The pair, 11 and 10 respectively, won double gold at the Somerset BJJ Open at Weston-super-Mare on Sunday June 26.

At the meeting, which included Mayor’s wife Sultan Ali and Kingsway ward councilors Shakil Ahmed and Rachel Massey, Andrew shared some of his experiences in past competitions and what he is aiming for in the future. sport.

The Major expressed how amazed he was at Andrew’s accomplishments representing the Borough of Rochdale at such a young age.

Andrew said: “It was a great experience and I’m very proud to continue to represent Rochdale across the UK and America.”

His father, Carlos, added: “Advisor Rachel Massey has been very supportive and helpful with the upcoming World Tournament to be held in America. They all wished Andrew good luck.

The Holy Family RC & CE College student is also well versed in judo and Thai boxing and has been offered the opportunity to compete in the IBJJF Pan American World Children’s Championships next month.

The event is considered one of the most prestigious Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournaments in the world and is held annually.

Andrew’s family is now fundraising to help him get to the World Championships in Florida. Any money donated will be spent on Andrew’s travel, food, accommodation, training and registration costs.
