Charlton v Sunderland

Sunderland have suffered poor results since the start of the year but they were back to their best in the 3-0 win at Wigan last Saturday and are set to follow up by beating struggling Charlton at the Valley.

The Black Cats have won just one of their first ten games in 2022 and appear to be out of contention for automatic promotion.

However, they remain hopeful of a playoff spot and must have taken huge confidence from last weekend’s success at Wigan, their first triumph in four attempts under new manager Alex Neil.

After all the recent noise surrounding the club’s announced pursuit of Roy Keane, Neil’s appointment seems like a sensible move.

At the age of 40, Neil is an ambitious young manager who has won promotions during spells at Hamilton and Norwich.

Above all, he inherited a group of talented players, who should be able to finish in the top six.

Sunderland will feel more confident after their win at Wigan and their growing confidence contrasts with the mood at Charlton, who have suffered five successive defeats.

The Addicks are eight points from the drop zone but are on their longest losing streak of the season and things are unlikely to improve this weekend.

Barrow v Walsall

Walsall are looking for a much more assured squad less than three weeks after the arrival of new manager Mike Flynn and they can move further away from the League Two relegation battle by beating Barrow at Holker Street.

The Saddlers have taken seven points from four games under Flynn, including two against the top two teams in the division.

They’ve opened up a seven-point gap to the drop zone and are in a much more comfortable position than third Barrow, who is only a point above the bottom two.

Barrow’s winless run extended to five with a 1-0 loss to Bristol Rovers on Tuesday and they face a tough game against Walsall without suspended centre-back Niall Canavan.

Bradford v Swindon

Swindon have the second-best away record in League Two and can claim a tenth road success of the season when they take on struggling Bradford at Valley Parade.

Ben Garner’s shrewd side have won three of their last four league games and are looking at the likeliest winners against the Bantams, who are on a four-game losing streak.

Newport v Bristol Rovers

Bristol Rovers are emerging as serious contenders for promotion from League Two and look like a solid bet to avoid defeat to fellow countrymen Newport at Rodney Parade.

Ninth-placed Joey Barton’s side have collected 13 points from the last 15 available and are just three behind Newport, who have recorded just one win in their last six matches.
